SAP, NetSuite, Odoo, Zoho or Novrex? An Honest Buyer's Guide for 2026

Five categories of ERP, five very different buyers. Here is the framework I use with my own clients to match the right platform to the right business — and where each one wins or loses.

10 min read

This is the question I am asked most often by founders, CFOs and IT heads: "Which ERP should we go with?" The honest answer is, "It depends on what you are actually trying to fix." So here is the framework I use with every client.

I will be direct: I work at Novrex. I am going to tell you where the others are stronger anyway — because nothing destroys trust faster than a vendor pretending the competition does not exist.

SAP S/4HANA — the right answer for the wrong reason

SAP wins on depth. If you are a ₹2,000 crore+ manufacturer with 14 plants, regulated supply chain and a 5-year transformation budget, SAP is genuinely hard to beat.

It loses on every other dimension that matters to a mid-market buyer. Implementation cycles measured in years. Consultants in the room every week. AI features that lag the market by 18 months.

Verdict: right answer for ₹2,000+ crore complex manufacturing. Wrong answer for almost everyone else.

Oracle NetSuite — strong on finance, weak on everything else

NetSuite has 25 years of accounting depth and a global consolidation engine that is hard to fault. If your business is finance-heavy and your operations are simple, it is a reasonable pick.

It loses on three things mid-market buyers care about: native marketing and e-commerce (you will need bolt-ons), AI maturity (the agent layer is recent and uneven), and total cost of ownership (the per-user pricing adds up fast).

Verdict: a strong pick for finance-heavy services businesses. Less strong if you sell physical goods or care about marketing automation.

Odoo — flexible, cheap, and exactly as good as your implementation partner

Odoo's open-source DNA gives it remarkable breadth and the lowest license cost in the market. If you have an excellent implementation partner and an internal team comfortable with technical configuration, it can be brilliant.

It loses on consistency. The quality of an Odoo deployment varies wildly with the partner. AI features are minimal and bolted on. And the modules that look complete in a demo often need significant customisation in production.

Verdict: strong for technical-leaning SMBs with a great partner. Risky for anyone hoping the software will run itself.

Zoho One — incredible value for very small teams

Zoho is the best deal in software for a 5–20 person business. For ₹2,000 per user per month you get 40+ applications, half of which would cost that much on their own.

It loses on cohesion as you grow. Past 50 employees, the apps start to feel like 40 different products from 40 different teams, because that is essentially what they are. AI is consistent in branding but inconsistent in usefulness across apps.

Verdict: outstanding for small teams. Becomes a liability past 50 users.

Novrex — what we built for the mid-market gap

We built Novrex for the buyers the five names above leave behind: ₹20–₹500 crore businesses that are too big for Zoho, too lean for SAP, and too operationally complex for a single point product to handle.

Where we are strong:

  • One data model across Marketing, ERP, E-Commerce and Analytics — no integration tax.
  • A multi-agent AI layer that reasons across all four — not a chatbot bolted on per module.
  • Multi-outlet, multi-tenant from day one.
  • GST, e-invoicing and Indian compliance native, not as a localisation pack.
  • Implementation measured in weeks, not quarters.

Where we are not the right answer: if you need 20 years of finance-engine depth (NetSuite), if you are a ₹2,000 crore regulated manufacturer (SAP), or if your business genuinely runs fine on five Zoho apps and you do not want it to grow much.

How to decide

Forget the matrices and Gartner quadrants. Pick three vendors. Hand them the same real-world scenario from your business. Ask each to deliver it in 14 days, using their AI, on their platform, with your actual data. The one that finishes first and most cleanly is the one to buy.

Software decisions are reversible. The cost of choosing slowly is always higher than the cost of choosing wrong.
